3 points to remember after separation

On Behalf of | Dec 30, 2022 | Child Custody

Parents going through a divorce will often live apart while the process is ongoing. Their children will have to learn to live between two homes instead of in only one. The parents must work as a team to provide the kid with everything they need.

Taking the time to determine what’s truly important can help to ensure your focus is in the right place. Consider these three points as you try to adjust to the new way of life.

Set the plan

One of the first things you need to do is to set the schedule for the children. This will likely be a temporary schedule since the permanent one will be included in the parenting plan. Think about the child’s activities and each parent’s schedule so you can do what’s best for the kids.

Communicate respectfully

You and your ex will have to communicate regularly because of the children. Keep these conversations respectful. Some say they use businesslike manners when dealing with their ex. Always speak directly to each other, and never try to pass messages through the children. If things get heated, take some time to calm down before coming back to the matter at hand.

Pay attention to the kids

Children may not always voice when something is amiss. Instead, you have to watch for signs that they’re struggling. This could be things like suddenly doing poorly in school or misbehaving. Talk to the other adults who are around your children often to find out if they see anything that must be addressed.

It’s best to get the parenting plan established as quickly as possible. This provides you with the foundation for all things related to child custody. Working with someone familiar with your situation and your child’s needs is beneficial.
